My Talk Talk contract is ending and I'm thinking maybe I should just call it a day on Home Broadband altogether. I still cannot get 5G in my area but it should be here soon. As I understand it the connection speed over 5G will be faster than I'm getting through my phone connection fibre deal. Of course I will need a 5G handset which I can then configure as a router. I will then use my current £10 pm SMARTY sim card. Any thoughts ?

Depends what you do with your internet connection. Is Smarty 5g unlimited? We tried Mobile Broadband (only 4g) in our caravan and it worked fine but it wasn’t super-reliable. We used a TP-Link router that took a regular SIM card. Optimally positioned that provided decent range. We have just upgraded to full-speed Fibre 900 from EE. It’s wonderfully quick and rock-solid. Openreach installed it and did a seriously crap job with the fibre cable but they sorted that out yesterday! Getting away from Talk Talk is liberating though. My Mum used them and I had a lot of trouble cancelling her connection. They wanted to charge until the end of the contract as they considered DYING to be insufficient excuse to leave them. Yes, I know, unbelievable!

I'm overpaying for everything. Looking at my Smarty dashboard I don't even use 1GB per month and yet I'm paying for 50GB pm at £10 a month. I should be on one of their cheaper plans, maybe 4GB for £6. But if I'm going to use it at home as well then I should stick to the 50GB but I still won't get anywhere close to that.
Also if I cancel my home braodband altogether I won't have a landline > Will that be a problem ? Not practically no. But is it advisable ?

You can still have Landline phone without having Broadband.

I'm still a bit confused about all this.
According to speedtests, my home talk talk via wireless is about 16.85 download and 17.81 upload. If I turn it off and instead connect via my phone as a hotspot it's 1.63 download and 0.5 upload.
Using my laptop with this connection does seem a bit slower HOWEVER the phone itself seems pretty fast most of the time similar to the laptop at the faster speed.
Is this because the SIM card is part of the hardware, or because the websites are designed specifically for the device ? THe measured speed is about the same 1.5 - 2.0 download.
What if I were to get a Tablet or other device whereby the SIM slot was in the device rather than say a 4G router or a Dongle for my laptop, or as above using the phone as a router/hotspot ?
What I'm after is a way of surfing the net using just my SIM connection without losing too much speed. I don't do streaming or anything fancy like that.

Your mobile connection (probably 4g) is obviously faster than your ADSL / VDSL connection (phone line). If you could get an Unlimited Sim deal and you could run to a 4G Router you could, potentially, save a few £££££

Regards all this talk of speeds, etc, I have had major problems with both speed and connectivity, with my (BT) internet. We've had engineers out 4 times in the past few months. The more experienced guy came twice, and he told me it was more to do with a fault on the cables (underground) from my building to the Exchange building, which is just up the block from us. It has a major impact on anyone using the wireless connection on their iphones, and things like firestick, and the likes. It is so frustrating! Apart from the fact it costs a fortune, one would like to get the service we pay for!

Gordo
I suspect you’re being told fibs by BT Engineers. There is no possible reason why a cable fault would impact on Wi-Fi devices. It would affect ALL devices. Your BT connection is straight into your router (Home Hub). They need to monitor the speed from your Master Socket. Your devices (phones, tablets etc.) connect over WiFi - your Home Hub simply distributes the signal (bandwidth) it receives. Suggest you challenge them to test the speed and prove that it is AT LEAST equal to the Guaranteed Minimum Speed for your package. Reliability is another factor. Suggest you document all drops in service.
Hope that helps in some way. You may need to get stroppy and tell them you’ll leave them for them to take any serious action.
Let us know how you get on?
Cheers

Well i woke up this morning and no broadband. Of course I was expecting it as 13th July was my cut off date. I am now free from TALK TALK. Configured my phone as a hotspot and here I am. Am I noticing any great difference ? thus far a slight "stutter" from what I'm used to. But well worth the saving as they were taking £39 a month. Yes I could find a cheaper deal and it took quite an effort to get TALK TALK off my back. They don't make leaving them easy. Half hour on the phone at least while they kept me on hold in order to "speak to the manager". But got there in the end. Let's see how I get on.

A couple of weeks in just using my mobile phone as a hotspot and tethering it to my laptop and I must say I'm quite pleased with my decision. Technically I am about 10X slower, but in practice I'm not really noticing much inconvenience. There is the odd dropout here and there but it soon comes back. And it seems faster at some times more than others. Youtube videos play just as well. I can do my horseracing hobby just as well. And that's about it. £10 per month and of course internet on the go. A good little saving if you don't mind not having a landline.
