The former Health Secretary (for England) Savid Javid, suggests folks should pay to see their doctors, and for hospital visits!!!
While the present Prime Minister has ruled this out, his deputy, Raab, says he "welcomes" the input to the debate from Javid.
His thinkinking on the matter is that this would reduce waiting times.
But I don't see how it actually would do so.
Also the suggestion folks should pay to visit Accident and Emergency units, is really off the planet!
As for the earlier Sunak idea of folks being charged if they miss appointments, which he has since abandoned, the claim this might help there too, hardly stands up in reality.
For it does happen at times, folks don't get the letter telling them they have an appointment.
They only find out later when they get some follow up letter telling them they missed an appointment. That happened to someone recently, who then had to phone a hospital to sort things out. And we wonder how many letters went missing during the Mail strikes of the past month.
How would paying a fee help in that circumstance? It wouldn't!
The Labour response has been less than brilliant, it must be noted!
"......... Labour’s shadow health secretary Wes Streeting told The Guardian: “Reform is not a Conservative word.
“In recent elections, the left has given a lot of people the impression the answer to everything is to pour more money in. Of course investment is needed in the NHS, but ask any patient about their miserable experiences and it’s partly about culture and systems. That’s got to change too.” ....... "
Somehow, I don't see this idea going anywhere.
But it does give us an example of some extreme tory ideologies, and a little panic we can imagine, as they search around trying to find any kind of solution to a problem all of their own making, with over a decade of underfunding and budget cuts across the board to important services.
While this story was reported on BBC Radio 4 News the other night, I can't find it anywhere on the Beeb website.
Maybe I ain't looking hard enough. Actually I did come across it eventually on BBC, all of one wee paragraph at the end of a totally unrelated story!!!
