I'm pretty sure it will be a good long time before "The End is Nigh", certainly in that apocalyptic sense. However, the end is nigh enough for many ppl in this day and age, from things like UK Govt Social Security policy!!!
There is the ongoing volcanoes going off here and there, mind. Very minor they all seem to be at the moment, but some huge eruption could well turn the planet's environment upside down, and "Global Warming" will cease in no time as we get a big cooling off effect, well in some parts of the World, anyway. In former times, such a scenario was indeed very deadly, with famine, etc, animals dying, and so on. The last time we had such a thing was about 1814, when the Mayon Volcano erupted in the Philippines. Tho an earlier Icelandic eruption in 1783 caused a very serious situation in much of northern Europe for a few years. Some historians say that was one of the factors that helped set off the French Revolution, but it would only have been one factor. There were other forces already in play by that time in France. The volcanic aftermath, would make an already wretched life for many in France, much worse, tho.
I'd like to think in this more modern age, such climatic situations can be mitigated with the technological advances we now have.
