Food prices will continue to increase for as long as energy companies are hit with exorbitant costs and the prices of goods to produce the food keep increasing. At least one supplier has a tracker on energy prices but is only allowing a small number of customers to be placed on it each week, with at least a 6 month waiting list for customers to be put on the tracker tariff. IMO food prices rise because of wage increases and fuel price increases both at the production level through higher electric and gas prices plus the increase in prices of other materials to grow the food. Shops might absorb some of the costs but they have to put up the prices eventually. Some well known brands are seriously overpriced when the same product can be bought as a stores own brand or as the cheapest savers option, in that list I put brand like Heinz and other well known brands that charge about £1.50 for a 400g tin of beans whilst the savers brand is less than 30p. Until a few months ago Asda was the cheapest for savers products but they are now as dear as the other supermarkets with their budget ranges, I believe the cheap prices was to draw in customers as Asda were making a loss on the product in this range. Asda also had a change of owners so that could be another reason why the prices of the budget range increased.
