I've just come across this idea/proposal on the benefits and work forum. The DWP might soon be able to see how people on benefits spend their income. Apparently checking accounts on a monthly basis !! Seems rather intrusive and demeaning to me. www.mirror.co.uk/money/dwp-could-soon-allowed-look-31351599

I bet some banks to comply fully and others saying they will only give out certain info like the amount in the accounts and the withdrawals and input into accounts like my bank did with me in 2015 when it transpired I had just £40 over the £6,000 minimum limit to receive deductions so I sent them a cheque for £80 as they hit me with another £40 fee on top of the £40.

Unbeleivable. Are they really going to start applying this rule rigidly so that a few bob over 6k will lead to automatic deductions ? How mad that would be. People will just draw the funds out and keep it at home as cash. Or give it to a trusted family member to keep in an account in said trusted family members name which I am sure happens very commonly particularly with disabled folks who still have their parents alive. Or shove it in a bookie account even. Or an obscure bank/building society. Or save up and treat yourself to something you need. Perhaps they are trying to encourage/force consumerism rather than savings.

It would seem some Banks are already doing things like this. Some of the Digital type Banks appear to at be, at least. Where Accounts can be frozen if they have no proof of where funds came in from. They don't want to be seen helping what they might suspect could be Black Market! Though, not sure, they actually go to DWP. As I've not heard of that happening with them.
A lot of folks, rather than risk losing funds, do what folks have always done, keep it in the house!
