UK Govt, has once again taken the Ian "D Smith approach to out of work benefit claimants, with new rules set to be put in place by end of next year. Labour have thus far, not been critical of such plans!!! While the Govt. like to point to all those million plus vacancies, it omits to note the majority of these will be part time Min Wage positions, and not particularly helpful for many ppl. And anyone in certain age groups, (over 50 and 60 for example) will hardly be taken on by many employers. from BBC News..................... www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-67439675

I believe that employers take on the over 50/60's as a last resort when there are no other applicants wanting the job.

They won't take on anyone who has been unemployed for a long time young or old and no government has even addressed that problem in my memory anyway. Governments just talk down the unemployed thus making things worse for them. Absurd.

I think this is yet another headline grabbing stunt from the tories, and along the lines of "Divide and Rule" tactics. This turns poor folks against each other, kind of thing, and so Govt hope to get re elected by looking and being "tough" on the peasant poor! The sad thing about this, is that many have found it near impossible to get back into work, but yet, they get treated this way by the Govt, who do not care the consequences of these policies. They haven't paid the slightest attention to all the many concerns raised over these past 12 years. Anyone who considers the Sunak Administration of trying to be centrist, as far as tories go, are deluded. And again, they turn on the Disabled and the ill, and infirm! Here is the ITV News report on the latests Govt benefits plans............... www.itv.com/news/2023-11-16/chancellor-refuses-to-rule-out-withdrawing-benefits-from-long-term-sickAs I note above, however, Labour has yet to say anything on, or criticize these new ideas. Well, I've not come across any complaints so far, from them.

Very interesting thanks for that link. But the news for Mr Hunt who knows nothing about economics is that people on benefits do not live on taxpayers money as there is no such thing. The source of funds comes from the DWP budget which comes from the Treasury which in turn comes directly from the Bank of England. no tax is involved.
The tax comes into the equation when you consider how this money is spent. All of it goes back again to the treasury in the form of tax. For example if I buy a bottle of Whisky a large proportion of the cost goes back to the Treasury in the form of alcohol duty and VAT. Some will go to the whisky producer who pays tax on it and some to the employees of the company who pay tax on it also. Some will go to the supermarket in profits who pay tax on that. Some to the checkout worker who pays tax on it also. Eventually as the recipients spend their portion that too will return to the treasury. There is a thing called the multiplier effect whereby the treasury actually receives more than it spends. So spending more pays for itself and produces a dividend on that spending. Benefits spending falls into that category.
