A woman who was getting Carer Allowance and also got a part time job, has had all of £16,000 inheritance taken away by DWP. She was told by a social worker she didn't have to declare her job at Co op, to DWP. Unfortunately, that was wrong advice. Rather than be compassionate, the DWP were as ruthless and cold hearted as possible, and so she has lost out on everything. Pity she can't sue the Social Services!!! However one thing this story does do, is show the confusion, and pitfalls of those who claim Carers Allowance, and also, just how inconsiderate of circumstances, DWP can be. Any wonder a lot of actual Carers don't see the point of even bothering to claim this thing? Govt. saves billions because of that, yet they treat some who made a genuine mistake as they would the most outrageous of frauds. Also, we do note it seems to be taking Govt, an awful long time to "claim back Taxpayers' money" from the likes of Michelle Mone! from BBC News............. www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-merseyside-68727007

If she worked less than 16 hours per week she would have kept the carers allowance.

We have something of a follow up to this kind of thing from DWP versus Carers. Guardian newspaper is running a story that a lot more Carers are being hounded and forced to pay back fortunes, over the most minor breaches of rules, sometimes over a mere few pounds or maybe even pence a week! The case highlighted above in this thread, is also mentioned in the Guardian story. DWP insists it's the Carers' fault for not informing of changes, etc, but not everyone knows what is the rules, and DWP is well aware of that fact. from The Guardian............... www.theguardian.com/society/2024/apr/07/unpaid-carers-allowance-payment-prosecution-earnings-rules

This has been known about for many a long donkeys year apparently and yet still it goes on. the problem is obvious it's with the way the law is designed so that if you go over earnings by £1 you don't just have a pound come off the benefit you lose the whole lot. Who thought that one up I wonder and how did it pass ? The Guardian newspaper had this as their headline story earlier but now it's completely disappeared. Shows how much they care. Here's their analysis however. It's worth reading to see how long this has been going on. Donkeys years. www.theguardian.com/society/2024/apr/07/why-are-so-many-carers-taken-to-court-for-benefit

Get CA and the cut off point is around £140, it might be less, and they remove the CA. The person can work for around 12 hours per week before they will lose the CA, the person has to look after the disabled person for a minimum 35 hours per week to claim the CA which many carers do full time without any work at minimum wage.

Another wee update on what now seems to be an ongoing story. BBC has done another report with this scandal. I reminded of the way the Post Office hounded the sub postmasters for money. DWP seems to be taking an almost similar approach towards Carers. You'd think the Govt. would show a bit of sympathy here, and some common sense, but that does not appear to be the case for the most part. From what we read in this BBC report, DWP is aware of whenever a Carer goes over the limit.... but don't inform that person, for years later, and after they then owe thousands! from BBC News............. www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-68774399

The DWP should inform a carer if they go over set limits like earning over £139 per week or the £6,000 limit that reduces any benefits, they don't do that because they know they can add £40 to any money they want to deduct from the person by letting them earn or have more in the bank than the limit. I never used to check my bank account, I used to just go to the cashpoint and get money out when needed but in Feb 2016 I was called in for a security check and it transpired that I was just £40, or thereabouts, over the £6,000 limit and they charged me another £40 so I sent them a cheque for £80 ish. After that I kept a close eye on the money in my account and if it was going to be over £6,000 on the date the benefit went in I withrew money either in one or two payments.
